The Brands That Set the Blueprint
Stussy is widely cited as the first modern streetwear brand, growing out of Shawn Stussy's hand-printed surfboard logos into a full clothing line by the mid-1980s. Around the same time, hip-hop culture in New York was pairing tracksuits and sneakers with a distinct visual identity, while Tokyo's underground scene — shaped by figures like Hiroshi Fujiwara — was building its own parallel version of the same culture. By the 1990s, brands like Supreme and BAPE picked up that blueprint and pushed it toward the limited-drop model that still shapes the industry today.
